Yusuke’s Ordeal arc is the first of five arcs in the first season of Yu Yu Hakusho. This arc covers manga volumes 1-3 (Chapters 1-18) and episodes 1-5 of the anime.
Yusuke has reclaimed his life, but has only one day to be revived by someone’s kiss — And that someone might be Kuwabara! Back in the flesh, Yusuke finds that he can now see supernatural creatures hiding in the living world. Yusuke quickly hunts down a demon criminal, saving Kuwabara and his beloved kitten, Eikitchi, in the process. Yusuke is declared a Spirit Detective by Koenma and discovers that his adventure is only just beginning.
Spirit World has forgotten an important question; does anyone in his life even want Yusuke brought back? Koenma decides to send Sayaka, a Spirit World investigator to find out. Yusuke is shocked to learn just how much his friends care. A fire breaks out in Yusuke’s apartment, threatening to burn his body. In her desperation, Keiko rushes inside to try and rescue him but gets trapped, too. Sayaka gives Yusuke an impossible choice. By throwing his Spirit Beast into the flames, Yusuke can save his childhood friend, but will lose his chance to come back...
With Yusuke dead, Kuwabara finds his life falling apart. Following a brawl with some thugs from a rival school, Kuwabara and his friends are forbidden from fighting for a week by a rat-toothed no-good teacher, Mr. Akashi. Not only that, but Kuwabara must also score over 50% on a test if Okubo, one of his friends, is to keep his after-school job and support his impoverished family. In order to help restore his life, Yusuke must give him an unseen helping hand.
Botan brings Yusuke to the Spirit World to meet with its ruler, the fearsome King Enma. Surprisingly for Yusuke, he instead meets the 700-year old Koenma contained in the body of a toddler. Koenma, the prince of Spirit World, presents Yusuke with an opportunity to restore his life. He must incubate and hatch a magical egg that contains a Spirit Beast. If Yusuke's soul is pure, the Spirit Beast will lead him back to his body. But if it is evil, the Spirit Beast will devour his soul and his body.
After what he would consider a normal day of skipping school, Yusuke Urameshi is hit by a car while trying to save a little boy’s life. He has just set into motion a large cycle of events that will set his life into a whirlwind of chaos. Upon meeting the sprightly pink-robed mystical being Botan, who claims to be the Grim Reaper, it is discovered that Yusuke’s sacrifice is a complete surprise to Spirit World and that they don’t have a place for him. Tragically, it is revealed that if Yusuke didn’t sacrifice himself, not only would the boy have avoided the car, but he would have one less scratch on his right arm. Botan makes Yusuke an offer to restore himself back to life. Yusuke initially refuses because he’s convinced that everyone would be better off without him. But after going to his wake and seeing his mother, his childhood friend Keiko, principal Takenaka, and even his rival Kazuma Kuwabara grieving for him, Yusuke makes the decision to go through with the ordeal.
